Objectives

Volume Reduction

Significantly decrease the volume of biosolids to lower transportation and disposal costs.

Environmental Compliance

Meet or exceed environmental regulations by producing pathogen-free, low-odor biosolids suitable for beneficial reuse.

Resource Recovery

Convert biosolids into valuable products such as biochar and syngas, promoting sustainability and potential revenue streams.

Implementation

The Authority integrated Stircor’s drying technology into its wastewater treatment facility. This process involves reducing the water content of biosolids to 10% or less, resulting in a Class A biosolid product. The dried biosolids are then subjected to gasification, a thermochemical process that converts organic material into biochar and syngas.

Outcomes

Volume Reduction

The implementation led to a substantial decrease in biosolid volume, reducing waste by four to five times.

Cost Savings

The reduction in volume translated to lower transportation and disposal expenses, optimizing the Authority’s operational budget.

Environmental Benefits

The production of pathogen-free, low-odor biosolids minimized environmental impact and facilitated beneficial reuse in applications like soil amendment.

Resource Generation

The gasification process yielded biochar and syngas, providing potential revenue streams and contributing to the Authority’s sustainability goals.

The partnership between the WCWSA and Stircor exemplifies how innovative technologies like drying and gasification can transform wastewater treatment practices.

By reducing biosolid volume, cutting costs, and promoting environmental sustainability, the Authority has set a benchmark for other municipalities facing similar challenges.
