Gasification Technology
Stircor’s gasification technology provides a proven, high-temperature thermal process engineered to remediate PFAS and emerging contaminants while reducing biosolid mass and long-term environmental liability.
Key Benefits
Designed for municipal and industrial facilities facing tightening regulatory pressure, gasification converts biosolids into stable, contaminant-free outputs with a significantly smaller environmental footprint than incineration or landfilling. Our systems deliver continuous, controlled performance with advanced monitoring, precise temperature management, and a turnkey operational model that allows facilities to leverage cutting-edge thermal treatment without adding internal staff or capital expense.
PFAS remediation to non-detect levels for long-term compliance and risk elimination
Destruction of pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and emerging contaminants
Significant reduction in mass and volume lowering downstream handling and disposal needs
Closed-loop thermal process with far lower emissions than incineration
Stable, inert byproduct suitable for safe, responsible disposal
Automated controls for consistent residence time, temperature, and airflow
Continuous-duty system design suitable for year-round municipal and industrial operations
Predictable, pay-per-ton pricing with no capital investment required
How It Works
Stircor’s gasification systems use controlled thermal decomposition in an oxygen-limited environment to break down organic material and destroy persistent contaminants such as PFAS. The process is engineered for throughput consistency, thermal stability, and regulatory compliance.
Feed Conditioning & Metering
Material is delivered to the gasifier at a controlled, pre-processed state to ensure consistent moisture content, particle size, and calorific value. Automated feed systems meter biosolids into the gasifier at a continuous, stable rate to maintain steady-state thermal operation.
Oxygen-Limited Thermal Conversion
Inside the reactor, biosolids undergo high-temperature pyrolysis and gasification within a strictly oxygen-limited environment.
Key engineering factors include:
- Temperature zones optimized for organic breakdown and contaminant destruction
- Uniform residence time to ensure complete conversion
- Automated oxygen injection control to prevent combustion while supporting syngas formation
This controlled thermal environment enables the destruction of PFAS molecules that cannot be safely managed through drying, composting, or conventional thermal means.
PFAS & Contaminant Destruction Chemistry
PFAS destruction occurs through:
- Thermal cracking of carbon–fluorine bonds
- Molecular dissociation at elevated temperatures
- Secondary reactions in post-reformer chambers to ensure complete fluorocarbon breakdown
The resulting inorganic fluorides are captured through downstream treatment rather than released to air.
Syngas Handling & Energy Management
The gasification process generates a low-BTU syngas stream that is routed through post-combustion chambers or thermal oxidizers.
Key functions:
- Full syngas oxidation for emissions control
- Heat recovery opportunities (optional)
- Stabilized thermal output that supports consistent PFAS destruction
Residue Handling & Stabilization
The remaining solid output is a mineralized, non-leachable ash containing no detectable PFAS or organic contaminants. This byproduct is significantly reduced in mass and can be disposed of safely.
Emissions Control & Monitoring
Downstream air handling includes:
- High-temperature oxidation of syngas
- Filtration and scrubbing to meet stringent air quality regulations
- Continuous emissions monitoring (CEM) integration for regulatory reporting
Centralized PLC Monitoring & Automation
All operational parameters — temperature zones, oxygen control, feed rate, gas flow, and emissions — are governed through a centralized PLC with full safety interlocks and real-time monitoring.
This ensures:
- Thermal stability
- Regulatory compliance
- Repeatable performance
- Rapid troubleshooting
- Safe continuous-duty operation
